Empirical and Theoretical Discourse: Some Overlap?

In reviewing the literature on prostitution, two trends become apparent. Most material has either an empirical format or a theoretical format. For example, the work done by Kate Millet (1971), although containing personal interviews, was very theoretical in origin and an empirical analysis was not a primary function of this work. A similar charge could be directed at the work done by Eileen McLeod (1982). In looking at the work done by Silbert and Pines (1981), and Kelly Weisberg (1985), a strong theme of empirical analysis exists, yet little theoretical material is developed.

The purpose of this chapter is to align the empirical findings from the Youngest Profession study within a theoretical framework. This will allow the development of a view of adolescent prostitution theoretically, yet which has within it an empirical base as its foundation.
